Summary of findings:

  • 35% of adolescents diagnosed with cancer met criteria for lifetime PTSD

  • 93% of children witnessing domestic violence had PTSD

  • 80% of Kuwaiti children exposed to violence in the Gulf War had PTSS

  • 34% of children who experienced either physical or sexual abuse had PTSD

  • 58% of children experiencing both physical and sexual abuse met criteria for PTSD

PTSD is a chronic disorder and untreated remits at a very low rate.  “ Indeed the residual emotional, behavioral, cognitive and social sequela of childhood trauma persist and appear to contribute to a host of psychiatric problems throughout life (Fergusson & Horwood, 1998).

These include:

  • Attachment problems

  • Depression and suicidal behavior

  • Anxiety

  • Eating disorders

  • Substance Dependency

  • Violent Behavior

Physical health problems have also been found to be associated with adverse childhood events. One study found a graded relationship between the number of adverse childhood events and disease outcomes examined (e.g., heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, and various risk behaviors) (Felliti, Anda, Nordenberg, et al. 1998).
