Attachment Theory

“Attachment theory  addresses  the propensity to form strong emotional bonds with particular individuals as an innate human characteristic, present in all individuals from the cradle to the grave.”   (Feeney & Collins, 2004)

Caregiving is an important part of  attachment relationships. What does it mean to be a good caregiver in adult relationships?  The limited research to date indicates that one’s ability to be a good caregiver is related to one’s attachment status.

“To remain within easy access of a familiar individual known to be ready and willing to come to our aid in an emergency is clearly a good insurance policy-whatever our age.”

(Bowlby, 1988).
