Attachment Status  and Family Functioning

Attachment  status also affects family functioning. Family system’s theory outlines 3 types of family functioning:

  1. Adaptive-which is described as mutually sensitive, openly communicative and  supportive, while open to each other’s autonomy

  2. Disengaged/Avoidant-which can be under-involved, angry and insensitive

  3. Enmeshed/Anxious-which is described as over-involved, intrusive, disrespectful of appropriate autonomy and boundaries.
